I finished the book Own It! The Ups and Downs of Homebuying for Women Who Go It Alone, by Jennifer Musselman. I enjoyed the book, both for its facts and for the author's personal experiences about homebuying. It also gives some pretty good resources in the back of the book, including some websites I've added to this blog.
I still have a lot of research to do before I get to the point of buying a home, and before that I want to finish getting my financial house in order. Add to the mix the fact that I'm thinking about going to grad school and have a car with a little over 100,000 miles on it, and I have even more planning to do! I have to think about my priorities, and what needs to come first, second, third, etc.
This is my journey toward first-time home ownership. I decided to turn this dream into a goal, and share my journey.

Morning Walk
This morning I took a walking break at work, and at a co-worker's suggestions, I walked around the Trinity Park neighborhood. I must say, I was charmed by the old(er) homes, big porches, and green lawns. It was fun to walk around and think about owning a home in that neighborhood (and I didn't even cover it all!).
I was glad to see a "Sold" sticker over the for sale sign in front of the Kings Daughters Home on Buchanan Blvd. I remember the building, a former residential center, from my undergrad days. There were painters around the outside of the building, stripping and repainting, and it looked like other repairs were (or would soon be) in progress. According to Bull City Rising, Kings Daughters is slated to become a bed and breakfast, which sounds wonderful! What a charming addition to the neighborhood (I think!).

Own It!
I've just started reading a new (to me) book called Own It! The Ups and Downs of Homebuying for Women Who Go it Alone, by Jennifer Musselman. Usually I wait until I finish a book before I review it, but I wanted to go ahead a hold a place for this book. Already, it makes some interesting points about homebuying and how a relationship fits into the equation.George and I have been living together in an apartment for a little over a year. We've talked a little bit about owning a home together, but not much. Our ideas about the type of home we want is different. (He wants a house with a yard that will accomodate multiple pets, for instance, and while I love animals in general, I don't feel like I have the time or energy to care for pets right now.) So, there are a variety of issues for us to talk about on the home-hunting front. (Our apartment hunt ended up well, I must say.) It'll be an interesting conversation on down the road, I know. (I'm sure we'll have planty of them, actually!)
I plan to let you know later how I like this book.
